This is a traditional European midwifery recipe that is officially endorsed in Switzerland in obstetric care. It is considered to be very safe as an effective support for the pregnant woman. It is especially valuable as a birth preparation as it helps to build up the strength of the uterus for effective contractions, strengthens your body for labour and reduces common pregnancy complaints such as morning sickness, nausea, fatigue and indigestion.
Horsetail (Equisetum arvense folia): Horsetail’s high silica content helps to strengthen the connective tissue and tones the uterus. A diuretic, it helps to prevent urinary irritations like cystitis. Its astringent properties help reduce the risk of haemorrhage and bleeding.
Lady's Mantle (Alchemilla vulgaris herba): Taken during pregnancy to prevent spot bleeding. Also taken to strengthen and prepare the uterus for a speedy birth and post birth to assist in the recovery of the womb.
Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis herba): During pregnancy and post birth, Lemon Balm helps to relieve depression and calms the heart. As a carminative, it helps to soothe nausea and vomiting and stimulates a poor appetite.
Nettle (Urtica dioica herba): Nettle leaf contains strengthening minerals including iron, calcium, magnesium, trace minerals, vitamins (A and C) and enzymes - all important nutrients in pregnancy for a healthy mother and baby.
Raspberry leaves (Rubus idaeus herba): Effective in suppressing nausea and morning sickness. Regular use during pregnancy helps to build strength of the uterine muscle, which promotes effective and less painful uterine contractions at birth, thus shortening its duration. Raspberry leaf supports recovery after birth also and stimulates milk production.
St John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum herba): Alleviates tiredness and fatigue. It is renowned for strengthening the nervous system and is beneficial for sufferers of mild anxiety during their pregnancy. It helps relieve pain from neuralgia, sciatica, backaches and headaches.
Yarrow (Achillea millefolium flos): Aids the elimination of urinary irritants to prevent cystitis. Yarrow is a vein tonic which helps to prevent haemorrhoids and varicose veins. It also helps to reduce blood loss making it useful at birth and post partum.
